Will Tricare Insurance Cover a Cranial Prosthesis

Tricare will cover your cranial prosthesis when your attending physician certifies that your hair loss results from treatment of a malignant disease. Once this is done, Tricare will cover one wig for the duration of your life, as long as you haven’t previously obtained a wig or hairpiece from any governmental agency, including the Department of Veterans Affairs. When coverage is accepted, Tricare will provide reimbursement up to $2,000.

What Tricare Covers

What Isn’t Covered Under Tricare?

Tricare’s benefits for a cranial prosthesis or a hairpiece do not cover:

  1. Hair transplants or other surgical procedures involving the attachment of hair or a hairpiece to the scalp.
  2. Hair loss resulting from a condition other than treatment of a malignant disease. For example, hair loss resulting from male pattern baldness will not be covered.
  3. Any diagnostic supply or procedure intended to encourage hair growth.
  4. Maintenance or replacement of the cranial prosthesis, as well as supplies, like adhesive tape.
